Make sure the head restraints are completely lowered. Pull the lever labeled 3 toward you. The person wearing the belt could be seriously injured. After raising the rear seatback, always check to be sure that the safety belts are properly routed and attached, and are not twisted. Page 24 Bench Seat Third Row If your vehicle has a full bench seat, the seatback can be folded, and the entire seat can be tilted, or removed from the vehicle. Folding the Seatback To fold the seatback, do the following: Pull up on the release lever labeled 1, located on the rear of the seatback, and push the seatback Open the liftgate to access the controls for the seat and enter the rear of the vehicle.
Page 26 Returning the Bench Seat from a Tilted Position To return the seat to the normal seating position, do the following: 1. Open the liftgate to access the controls for the bench seat and enter the rear of the vehicle. Pull the lever on the support rod bracket until it unlatches from the seat bracket. The seat cannot be removed unless the seatback is folded. Reclining the Seatbacks To recline the seatback, do the following: 1. Pull up on the lever located under the outboard side of the seat cushion.
Pull up on the strap loop located at the rear of the seat cushion and pull the seat Page 31 3. Page 32 Returning the Seats to the Normal Seating Position To return the seats to the normal seating position, do the following: 1. In a collision, people riding in these areas are more likely to be seriously injured or killed. Do not allow people to ride in any area of your vehicle that is not equipped with seats and safety belts.
Put someone on it. Take the simplest vehicle. Suppose it is just a seat on wheels. Page 35 Get it up to speed.
Then stop the vehicle. The rider does not stop. The person keeps going until stopped by something. In a real vehicle, it could be the windshield Page 36 or the instrument panel With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does.
You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That is why safety belts make such good sense. You could be — whether you are wearing a safety belt or not. But you can unbuckle a safety belt, even if you are upside down. Be aware that there are special things to know about safety belts and children.
And there are different rules for smaller children and babies. If a child will be riding in your vehicle, see Older Children on page or Infants and Young Children on page Page 39 5. To make the lap part tight, pull up on the shoulder belt. The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you would be less likely to slide under the lap belt.
Page 40 What is wrong with this? The shoulder belt is too loose. It will not give nearly as much protection this way. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury. Page 41 What is wrong with this? The belt is buckled in the wrong place. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen.
The belt forces would be there, not at the pelvic bones. Page 42 What is wrong with this? The belt is over an armrest. The belt would be much too high. In a crash, you can slide under the belt. Page 43 What is wrong with this? The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury.
Page 44 What is wrong with this? The belt is twisted across the body. In a crash, you would not have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. Page 45 To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle. Page Lap Belt Lap Belt When you sit in a center seating position, other than in the second row, you have a lap belt.
A lap safety belt does not have a retractor. To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt. Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts. Rear passengers who are not safety belted can be thrown out of the vehicle in a crash. Page 49 If the belt is not long enough, see Safety Belt Extender on page Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.
To unlatch the belt, push the button on the buckle. Page 51 2. Place the guide over the belt and insert the 3.
The guide must be on top of the belt. The shoulder belt should go over the shoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best able to take belt restraining forces. If you have the choice, a child should sit in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint a shoulder belt can provide.
What is the proper way to wear safety belts? If possible, an older child should wear a lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint Here two children are wearing the same belt. The belt can not properly spread the impact forces. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child.
If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt. This includes infants and all other children. Neither the distance traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle.
Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants. Page 58 For most basic types of child restraints, there are many different models available. When purchasing a child restraint, be sure it is designed to be used in a motor vehicle.
If it is, the restraint will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards. A child restraint system is any device designed for use in a motor vehicle to restrain, seat, or position children.
A built-in child restraint system is a permanent part of the motor vehicle. Page 62 When securing an add-on child restraint, refer to the instructions that come with the restraint which may be on the restraint itself or in a booklet, or both, and to this manual. The child restraint instructions are important, so if they are not available, obtain a replacement copy from the manufacturer. Page Where To Put The Restraint Where to Put the Restraint Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear rather than the front seat.
General Motors recommends that child restraints be secured in a rear seat, including an infant riding in a rear-facing infant seat, a child riding in a forward-facing child seat and an older child riding in a booster seat. This system is designed to make installation of a child restraint easier.
A top tether anchor is built into the vehicle. The top tether attachment B on the child restraint connects to the top tether anchor in the vehicle in order to reduce the forward movement and rotation of the child restraint during driving or in a crash.
Lower Anchor : Seating positions with two lower anchors. Second Row — Bench Seating positions with top tether anchors. Page 67 For Regular models, see the information following for installing a child restraint with a top tether in the third row, if you vehicle has one. Never install two top tethers using the same top tether anchor. For models with a second row bench seat, the rear right side passenger and center seating positions have exposed metal anchors located in the crease between the seatback and the seat cushion.
Page 68 Second Row Seat Bucket Similar — Extended Models For Regular models with third row seating, there is one top tether anchor located at the bottom rear of the seat cushion that can be used for either the center or passenger side seating position in the third row, but not for both. In a crash, the child could be seriously injured or killed. Page 71 2. If the child restraint manufacturer recommends that the top tether be attached, attach and tighten the top tether to the top tether anchor, if equipped.
Refer to the child restraint instructions and the following steps: 2. Find the top tether anchor. For the third row, if your vehicle has a bench seat, there are no top tether anchors in the outboard seating positions. Page 73 4. Pull the rest of the shoulder belt all the way out of 5.
To tighten the belt, push down on the child the retractor to set the lock. If your child restraint manufacturer recommends using a top tether, and the position that you are using has a top tether anchor, attach and tighten the top tether to the top tether anchor. Page 75 3. The child restraint instructions will show you how.
Buckle the belt. Make sure the release button is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to. Never secure a child restraint in the center front seat. It is always better to secure a child restraint in the rear seat. Page 78 3. Page 79 6.
To tighten the belt, push down on the child restraint, pull the shoulder portion of the belt to tighten the lap portion of the belt and feed the shoulder belt back into the retractor. Page Airbag System Airbag System Your vehicle has a frontal airbag for the driver and a frontal airbag for the right front passenger. Your vehicle may also have side impact airbags.
Side impact airbags are available for the driver and right front passenger. Everyone in your vehicle should wear a safety belt properly — Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer the best protection for adults, but not for young children and infants.
See Airbag System on page Airbags should never be regarded as anything more than a supplement to safety belts, and then only in moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal collisions for the frontal airbags, and only in moderate to severe side collisions Additional windshield breakage may also occur from the right front passenger airbag. Page Servicing Your Airbag-Equipped Vehicle Aftermarket equipment, such as seat covers, can affect how well the passenger sensing system operates.
You may want to consider not using seat covers or other aftermarket equipment if your vehicle has the passenger sensing system. Page 93 Adding Equipment to Your Airbag-Equipped Vehicle Is there anything I might add to the front or sides of the vehicle that could keep the airbags from working properly?
Page Restraint System Check Restraint System Check Checking the Restraint Systems Now and then, make sure the safety belt reminder light and all your belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. If you see anything that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job, have it repaired. A damaged restraint system may not properly protect the person using it, resulting in serious injury or even death in a crash.
To help make sure your restraint systems are working properly after a crash, have them inspected and any necessary replacements made as soon as possible.

Page Drunken Driving Drunken Driving Death and injury associated with drinking and driving is a national tragedy. It is the number one contributor to the highway death toll, claiming thousands of victims every year. Page According to the American Medical Association, a lb 82 kg person who drinks three 12 ounce ml bottles of beer in an hour will end up with a BAC of about 0.
A driver with a BAC level of 0. Braking action involves perception time and reaction time. First, you have to decide to push on the brake pedal. That is perception time. Then you have to bring up your foot and do it. That is reaction time. Average reaction time is about three-fourths of a second.
ABS is an advanced electronic braking system that will help prevent a braking skid. When you start your engine and begin to drive away, your anti-lock brake system will check itself. You may hear a momentary motor or clicking noise while this test is going on. Page Braking In Emergencies The anti-lock system can change the brake pressure faster than any driver could. The computer is programmed to make the most of available tire and road conditions.
This can help you steer around the obstacle while braking hard. As you brake, your computer keeps receiving updates on wheel speed and controls braking pressure accordingly.
