Ask a question and give support. If by wireless it's pretty much the same except there are no ethernet LEDs. Start unencrypted, then add encryption after you have the pings working. Thank you for the reply. I am using a crossover and I get link lights. I dont have the laptop with me atm I will try pinging the addresses I had not thought of that.

What confuses me is that a local computer store whom Ive done business with many times in the past tells me that it is not possible with Vista to go P2P over a crossover cable and I need to set up an Ad Hoc wireless network in Vista, and I tried that too. I initiate the wireless ad hoc in Vista on the Presario, and Inspiron connects to it.

But they still cannot "see" each other, even though I have created a shared folder on each machine. I have even considered collecting the drivers I would need to retro back to XP on my new Presario, with all the bad press my computer guru friends at the computer store are giving Vista, they are making is sound impossible to do what i want to do, so this is my last ditch effort to understand what Vista is doing. I was doing some research and came across a forum that mentioned Link Layer Protocols or something missing on XP machines and thats why Vista cant "see" XP on P2P networks, and will try that before I throw in the towel on Vista Thanks for any help.

The Network Map is pretty eye candy, but has nothing to do with file and printer sharing. So, it is possible to have an ethernet cable patch or crossover that is wired incorrectly but will still work with mbps ethernet. Does your Vista have a gigabit adapter? I learned from Bob Cerelli and JohnWill and other experts on this forum to always worry about getting ping by IP address working first.

If it works in one direction but not the other there is a firewall blocking. If it works in neither direction there are two firewalls blocking or there is a bad cable or NIC or the ad-hoc wireless is not really working. I am not sure if the Presario has gigabit ethernet, however I have a fully wired crossover, actually two of them, one is a purchase, and the other I crimped together myself from a diagram I found on the web, and its a fully wired cable.

Both cables are working though, since I use them with the network successfully before Vista came along I know for a fact that the Inspiron is older, and most probably doesnt have gigabit ethernet. I have turned off both machines' firewalls for troubleshooting, since I am not using them on the open internet. But when I get the chance I will indeed try to ping the machines to see if I'm getting throughput at least Thanks.
